Originally, the last Sunday in June was celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” but the actual day was flexible. As the riots progressed, an international gay rights movement was born. The Stonewall uprising was a series of violent confrontations that began between police and gay rights activists outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. LGBTQ Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. As Pride month comes to an end, lets have a quick history lesson on how this much needed month of celebration, love, acceptance, and appreciation began.
